Kelly McCann is a dj and promoter for Scooby Doo Crew. Scooby Doo Crew is one of the oldest and best production crews in Houston. They have been producing events since 1996, such as club nights, small and large events, beach parties, festivals, and underground warehouse parties.
SDC and Revolutions are hosting an event called "Evolution 2" on Feb. 12th, 2011. The information will be at the end of this Q&A.
Sinical Magazine: What was your first event production?
Kelly McCann: New World in 1996.
Sinical Magazine: How much has your sound & lighting equipment built up over the years?
Kelly McCann: Well, we had over 40 cabinets of sound but our warehouse caught fire 4 years ago. Luckily, we were doing another event that night and we had 12 cabinets in use.
Sinical Magazine: Which event do you feel was the best production for SDC?
Kelly McCann: We did an event in a Cave in 2009. It was a small event but 500 people were invited and we did a spectacular production.
Sinical Magazine: In what ways has the electronic music scene in Houston changed since the late 90's?
Kelly McCann: The music has changed, dress style has changed and there seems to be more participation with the events. Loads of people are dressing in costume and more performance art.
Sinical Magazine: What caused the end of the massive Crystal Beach gathering?
Kelly McCann: We are still hosting free beach gatherings at different beaches, however, we do not promote them as heavily as the Crystal Beach gatherings. Since the massive Crystal Beach gathering in 2001, Texas has passed laws prohibiting any mass gathering of more than 200 people at any beach without a permit. The permits cost money, which would force us to charge admission for a beach party. We want to keep it a free event.
Sinical Magazine: Can you tell us about your style of djing?
Kelly McCann: Today I play: Glitch Hop, Mid Tempo and DubStep. The music is more bass and mainly broken beats.
Sinical Magazine: Do you go into a dj set with a plan or just go with the flow of the night?
Kelly McCann: It depends. I go into it with a planned set but most of the time I end up changing things up during my set.
Sinical Magazine: What are you listening to musically right now?
Kelly McCann: I have been listening to old Funk Music lately. I grew up going to Funk shows (Bad Mutha Goose, Retartrd Elf, BillyGoat, Sprawl, etc). I have been trying to bring back Funk in my set mixing it up with todays sound.
Sinical Magazine: Your birthday is February 8th. How do you feel about turning 42? Will you be having a birthday bash?
Kelly McCann: A little late in answering this question. But, YES! We had an event in an old fire station and it went OFF!
Sinical Magazine: April 16th is the 15th anniversary of Scooby Doo Crew. What do you have planned?
Kelly McCann: We plan on Mixing the old with the new! We want to bring it back and push the envelope at the same time! Right now we are searching for a special place to that can handle lots of people!
