Interview: 171 Photo

Model: Hellcait

This interview was featured in the Jan/Feb 2023 issue of Sinical.

Sinical Magazine: When did you first become interested in alt/pinup photography?

171 Photo: I’ve always admired pinup and alternative work so it was the goal from the beginning when I stepped into modeling photography.

Sinical Magazine: What type of camera and lighting equipment do you use?

171 Photo: I live by my AD200 PROs, most often I’m firing them through a beauty dish or 2×3 softbox. Almost all of my work is done with my Canon R6 paired w/ EF 35mm f/1.4

Sinical Magazine: Who are some of your influences or favorite photographers?

171 Photo: Almost all of my influence comes from Movies & TV. Whether it’s the colors I use, a specific composition I’m aiming for, or the concept itself, it all ties back in some way.

Sinical Magazine: What do you think is the most important aspect of a photo?

171 Photo: Lighting. Whether you’re using strobes, continuous, or natural, lighting makes or breaks a photo.

Sinical Magazine: Can you talk about this photo set?

171 Photo: This set was actually my first time playing with hard light & shadow casting. I let HellCait work her posing magic while I experimented with different positions and modifier setups until I dialed into what I was looking for.

Sinical Magazine: You have also shot live events. Can you talk about how you approach this style of photography?

171 Photo: I approach live events similar to how I do my studio work in that I’m really looking for that one perfect shot. If I can capture a moment that makes even one person say “I wish I was there”, I did my job.

Sinical Magazine: What are some of your favorite films?

171 Photo: Man on Fire and Big Fish are my two uncontested favorites. Vastly different movies but both are well written, well directed, and visually appealing.

Sinical Magazine: How have you kept yourself creative and busy recently?

171 Photo: I have a video series I’ve been keeping very close to chest for roughly 2 years that will be seeing the light of day very soon. |
