Sinical Magazine: When were you born and where? Where are you currently located?

Nadia Choates: I was born on October 28th, 1987 in a small city by the name of Lake Charles, La. I currently reside in Houston, Texas.

Sinical Magazine: What was the first magazine that you came across that made you want to become a model? If not a magazine, what inspired you?

Nadia Choates: I have been obsessed with thinkers my whole life. I was informed at one point during a lecture in class (I think I was sixteen or so) that there were a few models who had Ivy League degrees. And having never thought much on the topic of modeling, I looked them up to see what they looked like. I was introduced to more designers I had never heard of. I saw the beauty and art in it all. I knew I wanted to join in on the fun.

Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in pin-up/fetish modeling?

Nadia Choates: I like to believe I don’t limit myself when it comes to modeling. Never pigeon-holing, always looking forward to trying new things. Different looks for every shoot. High fashion to cosplay to latex. I had my first latex shoot three years ago and fell in love. I’ve always loved alternative models and found their work to be more fantastical.

Sinical Magazine: What do you think makes a model stand apart from others?

Nadia Choates: Honestly, I believe it’s the ability to disappear into whatever character you are portraying. I hear often as people look through my portfolio, “Oh, that doesn’t even look like you!” That is often the point. There are many girls that can cock a hip and throw a smile at a camera. I think the good models are true artists and understand how to make the viewer feel things.

Sinical Magazine: From a model’s perspective, what do you think is the most important aspect of a photo?

Nadia Choates: Composition! But I am also an artist primarily (graduated with a BFA in Drawing /Printmaking), so I might perceive that differently, I am not sure. I believe everything else could be right in a photo, the lighting, the model, but if the composition is off, it hinders the image from reaching it’s true potential.

Sinical Magazine: What has been the most interesting thing to happen during one of your photo shoots?

Nadia Choates: Once in Austin, I saw the bar from Death Proof whilst shooting. It was still very early on in my modeling, and I wasn’t quite as confident as I am now. I was hitting a rough patch in posing, but then I looked over and saw it. No one had told me it was there. I had a legitimate freak out moment, and smiled so big I though the sides of my lips would crack. Needless to say, I felt like a bad bitch for the rest of the shoot.

Sinical Magazine: Clothing wise, what are your fetishes and why?

Nadia Choates: I love shoes and underwear. Oh gosh, especially shoes. I have a major thing for creepers and boots. (Heels have their appropriate moments). I also think a woman can be wearing something modest and be hiding a sexy body with lovely garments underneath. That idea is sooo very sexy to me. And the shoes, well, they make me feel at home. Like I can rock whatever I wear with them. A good pair of shoes makes your self-esteem rise, I believe.

Sinical Magazine: What are your measurements?

Nadia Choates: 33(a-b)/ 26/ 38.

Sinical Magazine: What is your shoe size?

Nadia Choates: Size 8-8.5 (Usually).

Sinical Magazine: Can you talk about some of your tattoos?

Nadia Choates: Currently, I have one unfinished tattoo which is my Moulin Rouge piece on my right inner arm. I am dying to get it finished. So far, it shows some promise. It’s in line to becoming my favorite art so far. I am obsessed with the movie, my favorite uncle showed it to me a long time ago when my mom wasn’t fully ok with my stepsisters and I watching it. (ya know, being about the courtisans and all). He passed a few years ago, and the tattoo commemorates one of my favorite memories with him. Many of my other tattoos are for family members (Belle’s mirror on my inner left arm for my mother, birds on my chest and lower back flower tattoo for my grandma (passed), and a compass on my right foot for my grandfather (passed). All the other ones are all for me, though.

Sinical Magazine: What type of music do you listen to?

Nadia Choates: A little bit of everything. Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of Black Lips (because I’m going to see them in a week) and Tove Lo. I’ve been feeling some local scenes, too. Everyone should check out “We Are Computers” out of Houston, Texas as well as “Mad Maude and the Hatters.”

Sinical Magazine: What are some of your favorite books and authors? And what are you currently reading?

Nadia Choates: I just finished “The Second Sex” by Simone de Beauvoir. A few of the books I just cannot live without: “Nausea” by Jean-Paul Sartre, “Stardust” by Neil Gaiman, “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair, “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Sinical Magazine: Besides modeling, what do you like to do for fun?

Nadia Choates: I work on art commissions and teach painting, which are jobs, but I think they’re fun. My boyfriend is in a band (We Are Computers) and I go out and see them as well as lots of other local acts whenever I have the time. I drink with friends, go to art shows, museums. Try to take over the world. You know, the usual.

Sinical Magazine: Do you have any other upcoming projects you would like to mention?

Nadia Choates: I have been dipping my toe into creative designs for other shoots and I think I may just have a bigger one coming up soon with lots of tattoed ladies. Keep your eyes peeled! |
