Marisa Pike Interview

Model: Sugar

Marisa Pike is a Los Angeles-based photographer. She holds a bachelor's degree in fine art photography, and a 2nd degree in art history. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums for over 15 years. Her most recent show was at the Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica, CA.

Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in photography?

Marisa Pike: Growing up I was always the one with the camera in my group of friends or family; but I didn't start using a fully manual camera until 15 years ago when I took a photography class.

Sinical Magazine: What is the most important aspect of a composition to you?

Marisa Pike: The most important aspect of a composition to me would be having a definite focal point; no matter how busy the image might be, being able to draw the eye to the main part of the story.

Sinical Magazine: What type of camera equipment do you use?

Marisa Pike: A Mamiya 645AFD (for film) and a Nikon D600 (for digital), with strobes or available light.

Sinical Magazine: What is your favorite lens (or focal length) for portraits?

Marisa Pike: For my Mamiya I use a 55mm f2.8 and for the Nikon a 24mm F3.5.

Sinical Magazine: Do you work with strobes or continuous lighting?

Marisa Pike: Strobes; I like both, but I'm just used to strobes.

Sinical Magazine: Do you have a favorite lighting setup?

Marisa Pike: I don't have a particular favorite, it's dependent on the specific shoot, and I may use two strobes (silver and white), one strobe or available light.

Sinical Magazine: Who are some photographers that have inspired your work?

Marisa Pike: A combination of many; Cindy Sherman, Irving Penn, Norman Parkinson, David LaChapelle, Richard Avedon, Eugenio Recuenco, Patrick Demarchelier.

Sinical Magazine: What other artists have inspired your work?

Marisa Pike: Friday Kahlo, Marisol Escobar, Man Ray, Andy Warhol, Diego Rivera, Pauline Boty; an "all over the place" of artists, I think this is why every shoot I do is a bit different from the last.

Model: Bondi Holly.

Sinical Magazine: Do you prefer to shoot inside a studio or on location?

Marisa Pike: On location, most of the time.

Sinical Magazine: What are some of your favorite outdoor locations to shoot at?

Marisa Pike: I don't really have a "favorite" outdoor location, but one that I keep going to is the hills that are behind my home.

Sinical Magazine: What projects are you currently working on?

Marisa Pike: I just finished my book "Fixated On The Housewife". I'm constantly trying to find a good story to interpret.  I'm in the middle of getting my 8mm Kodak Brownie fixed, so we'll see how that goes.
