Miss Missy Interview

Model: Leigh James.

Q: What drew you to pin-up photography?

A: My mother had these amazing photos of herself and I used to stare at them when I was a kid. I am also very inspired by movies from the 80's that were about the 50's. The fashion and cars were so much more fun. When I was around 20 I started listening to a lot of rockabilly music and wanted to be a pin up model. I would doll myself up and set a timer on a second hand camera. I learned SO much by doing that, even though it makes me feel silly looking back at it. I would also take photos of friends on weekends, but always styled them like pin up girls.

Q: What kind of camera/film do you use?

A: I am a Nikon user! I've not played with film yet... I guess I'm a bit of a cheater. I consider myself to be more of an artist than anything else. I am known for my photography work, but styling everyone and doing all the makeup and hair and editing it becomes more than photography.

Q: Are you self-taught or did you go to school for photography?

A: I've never taken a class on anything. I've learned everything myself. Just looking at different photographs and studying lighting and my camera. I still have a few things I need, to make my photos look how I want them to look,  but everything is so expensive... I want to upgrade my camera, lens and need a few more lights and I should be okay for a little while.

Model: Masuimi Max.

Q: What are your visual obsessions?

A: Bullet Bras, Vintage cameras, big hair, good makeup, body art... I don't know where to start or end with this one..

Q: Do you touch up your photos?

A: Always... I like everyone to look as perfect as possible. Who wants to be immortalized NOT looking their best? Not I.

Q: Who are your inspirations?

A: Bunny Yeager, Irving Klaw... pretty much anyone who's photographed Bettie Page. She's my favorite. There is just something about her that I keep trying to capture in girls today. She must have been a dream to work with! Most of all I am inspired by powerful women. I hope someone thinks of me as one.

Model: Jessamyne.

Q: Is there a certain model you would like to work with?

A: Kat Von D, Bernie Dexter, Mosh, Jami Deadly, Sabina Kelley. I also want to start shooting different artists, not in a pin up style, but in their own element.

Q: Do you have any pet peeves when it comes to models?

A: I don't like when models think they own the show and you're just there to take their photo and that's it. It's all about creating something together. Unless of course you are paying me.

Q: Have you been able to maintain a living from photography or is it more of a hobby?

A: Breaking even as of right now. I put everything right back into it and trying to get to LA whenever I can. Maybe one day I will make money I can spend on myself, but it's not a hobby.

Model: Ruca.

Q: Do you have a website or any photography packages? If so, please tell us about it.

A: It's on my site... missmissyphotography.net :)
