New Apple Technology Prevents Filming of Live Events

Pirates take back your iPhones.  Apple joins the evil empire.

Fox News reports (Yes, Fox) : CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Fans at concerts and sports games may soon be stopped from using their iPhones to film the action -- as a result of new technology being considered by Apple, The Times of London reported Thursday.

The California company has plans to build a system that will sense when a person is trying to film a live event using a cell phone and automatically switch off their camera.

A patent application filed by Apple, and obtained by the Times, reveals how the software would work. If a person were to hold up their iPhone, the device would trigger the attention of infra-red sensors installed at the venue. These sensors would then instruct the iPhone to disable its camera.

Other features, such as the phone’s ability to make a call or send text messages, would not be affected.

The software is seen as an attempt to protect the interests of event organizers and television broadcasters who have exclusive rights to film an event. These companies often sell their own recordings but are frustrated when cell phone videos appear online via websites such as YouTube, allowing people to watch the concert free.

The concept may also allow Apple to reach more favorable terms with record labels when negotiating deals to sell content though its iTunes online store.

Apple filed its patent application with U.S. authorities 18 months ago, but details only became available this month. It is not clear if Apple intends to develop the concept into a working system, and if so, whether it will be implemented within the company’s devices. The latest version of iPhone is expected in September.

Apple declined to comment.

Well. Not really.  Steve Wozniak would have never let this happen.

The Science of Evil

"Radical" ideas on the way we think about evil.

The New York Times reviews "The Science of Evil" : “The Science of Evil,” by Simon Baron-Cohen, seems likely to antagonize the victims of evil, the parents of children with autism spectrum disorder, at least a few of the dozens of researchers whose work he cites — not to mention critics of his views on evolutionary psychology or of his claims about the neurobiology of the sexes. “The Science of Evil” proposes a simple but persuasive hypothesis for a new way to think about evil.

“My main goal is to understand human cruelty, replacing the unscientific term ‘evil’ with the scientific term ‘empathy,’ ” he writes at the beginning of the book, which might be seen as expanding on the views on empathy expressed in his 1997 book, “Mindblindness: An Essay on Autism and Theory of Mind” (Bradford). Evil, he notes, has heretofore been defined in religious terms (with the concept differing in the major world religions), as a psychiatric condition (psychopathology) or, as he puts it, in “frustratingly circular” terms: “He did x because he is truly evil”).

Dr. Baron-Cohen, a professor of developmental psychology at the University of Cambridge and director of the university’s Autism Research Center, proposes that evil is more scientifically defined as an absence of empathy, exacerbated by negative environmental factors (usually parental, sometimes societal) and a genetic component. When these three exist in tandem they result in what he calls a Zero-Negative personality. Zero-Negative takes at least three forms (and possibly more), borrowing from terms used in psychiatry: Zero Type P (psychopathology), Zero Type B (borderline disorder) and Zero Type N (narcissism).

Whereas psychiatry groups these three loosely under the term “personality disorders,” Dr. Baron-Cohen proposes that they all share the characteristic of zero degrees of empathy. (His “empathy quotient” scale is available in the book or online, with an instant numerical score that is translated into degrees of empathy from zero to six, or super empathy.)

George Bush would say that evil is just the result of hating our way of life.

War On Drugs Failing

This really shouldn't come as a surprise.

Opiate use rose by 35% worldwide from 1998-2008, in spite of anti-drug efforts

BBC gets high on the hog :

"The global war on drugs has 'failed' according to a new report by a group of politicians and former world leaders.

The Global Commission on Drug Policy report calls for the legalisation of some drugs and an end to the criminalisation of drug users.

The panel includes former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the former leaders of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil, and the entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.

The US and Mexican governments have rejected the findings as misguided.

The Global Commission's 24-page report argues that anti-drug policy has failed by fuelling organised crime, costing taxpayers millions of dollars and causing thousands of deaths.

It cites UN estimates that opiate use increased 35% worldwide from 1998 to 2008, cocaine by 27%, and cannabis by 8.5%."

The Sydney Morning Herald passes the hog leg :

"Earlier this month something called the Global Commission on Drug Policy called for the decriminalisation of all drug-taking. This matters because the commission includes the ex-presidents of Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Switzerland, and a former secretary-general of the United Nations, an ex-US secretary of state, and an ex-chairman of the Federal Reserve. One day people might proclaim this position on drugs while they‘re still in important positions rather than after they’ve left. Even so, this is the most high-ranking bunch so far to call for an end to the prohibition.

The Economist of 4 June listed some of the key points in the Commission’s report.

  • In the 10 years to 2008, the numbers taking cannabis increased 8.5%, cocaine 27%, and heroin 34.5%.
  • America spent US$15 billion on drug control in 2010.
  • 35,000 people have been killed in the war on drugs in Mexico in the past five years.
  • A study of American states found no correlation between the diligence of enforcement efforts and changes in numbers of users.
  • Cocaine use has grown rapidly in South America and West Africa (an important link in the supply chain to Europe).

In other news to handThe Wire's creator David Simon has accused the US Attorney-General of waging war on the underclass with America's drug policies. Eric Holder, trying to be cool, called for Simon to produce a sixth season of the "great" television series. Simon responded: 'We are prepared to go to work on season six of The Wire if the Department of Justice is equally ready to reconsider and address its continuing prosecution of our misguided, destructive and dehumanising drug prohibition'."

Courthouse Staircase Fulfills Upskirt Fantasies

As they say, truth is stranger than fiction.  Being a fan of upskirt myself, I found this article near and dear.

Franklin County Courthouse, Ohio

Mediate uses a shoe-mirror to figure this out : "'Men designed it.' That’s the only reason Judge Julie Lynch, an Ohio Common Pleas Judge can come up with to explain the odd problem with Franklin County’s brand new courthouse. The building was built for $105 million and features a gorgeous glass staircase going through the lobby. However, someone forgot to think of what clear steps means for women wearing skirts or dresses.

Oh, well. Hindsight is 20/20. Incidentally, until this problem is fixed, hindsight is what everyone in the lobby is going to get.

I’m sure people will be respectful about this, right?"

From Ohio’s 10TV : “Lynch said that many people who visit the courthouse are there because of questionable choices.

‘They hope people will be mature? That’s not a solution,’ Lynch said. ‘If we had mature people that didn’t violate the law, we wouldn’t have this building.’”

Man... talk about a judgemental bitch.

Those Ohioans think they're so special!  We got a glass staircase! Wah! I found lot's more and better examples for all you pervs here.
