Peter Gonzales Interview

Ulorin Vex.

Peter Gonzales is a published photographer based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Look for his work in an upcoming issue of Sinical Magazine.

Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in photography?

PG: On a whim. I went to a wedding and helped a friend shoot his sisters wedding and thought "this looks like fun, I could do this....". A month later I bought a camera and started reading.

Sinical Magazine: What is the most important aspect of a composition to you?

PG: I have sense of the emotion I want an image to reflect so many times, the composition will change in post. Full lengths become head shots, portraits become landscapes. I think most importantly, the image must emote, and sometimes you must be willing to go past your original thoughts to get there.

Sinical Magazine: What type of camera equipment do you use?

PG: Canon Cameras and lens. Alien Bee Lighting and modifiers.

Sinical Magazine: What is your favorite lens (or focal length) for portraits?

PG: My workhorse is a 24-105L F4. More and more though, I find my 70-200 2.8L to be on my camera. If possible, I will stay within the 70-120 range when shooting models and portraits.

Sinical Magazine: How much planning goes into a typical shoot?

PG: Not a ton. I am not a visual planner. Many photographers can see their final product in their head, but I am not one of those. I have an idea of wardrobe, the feeling I want, look I want. Then you put it all together and see where it goes. I love the feel of chasing something till you find what you were looking for all along.

Sinical Magazine: Do you have a favorite lighting setup?

PG: I tend to use a 4 light set up the most, sort of a modified butterfly set up

Sinical Magazine: Who are some photographers that have inspired your work?

PG: Early on, it was Robert Alvarado, Lithium Picnic. Nowadays, the list grows everyday. There are some amazing people out there, even hobbyists doing amazing things. Right now, Paul Buceta, Kalypso, Marcos Rivera to name a few...

Sinical Magazine: What other artists have inspired your work?

PG: I am inspired daily by the ordinary guys, doing it for fun or as a hobby that are so talented and dedicated. They make some amazing imagery and its cool to know that inspiration can come from anyone.

Sinical Magazine: Do you prefer to shoot inside a studio or on location?

PG: I shoot mostly studio but find myself venturing out more and more lately.

Sinical Magazine: What are some of your favorite outdoot locations to shoot at?

PG: Anywhere with LOTS of texture.

Sinical Magazine: Who in your opinion, are the top 5. alt models?

PG: Not touching that one. :) I work with a lot of great people that all have something unique to offer so its hard to pick just 5!

Jade Vixen

Sinical Magazine: Do you have any pet peeves when it comes to working with models or clients?

PG: When it is all boiled down, this is work for me and I want people to treat it as such. Be timely, efficient, rested, creative and willing to go the distance. I will be the same. I am not the star struck type so I treat people as they treat me. Being open and honest can go a long way to forging a long lasting creative relationship.

Sinical Magazine: What projects are you currently working on?

PG: Just finished up a few major projects so those are in production now. Looking at traveling later this year to the west coast to begin working on a series shoots for publication. Here I come!
