Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in photography?

Shannon Brooke: My Auntie gave me a 35mm Nikon F-Series and I had no idea how to use it!  I took a few photography classes at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo California, and I fell in love.  Art was always a way for me to express myself, but I couldn't find the right medium to make it a living.  This was something that made absolute sense to me, creatively and technically.

Sinical Magazine: What is the most important aspect of a composition to you?

Shannon Brooke: Simplicity and drawing the eye comfortably around the image.  I love symmetry.

Sinical Magazine: How much planning goes into a typical shoot?

Shannon Brooke: Sometimes it takes me days to figure out the right locations, wardrobe, props, models, etc.  But most of the time I can walk into a situation and make it into something beautiful.  I think lighting is everything, it can change the shape, color, and mood of anything... it's like magic!

Sinical Magazine: Do you have a favorite lighting setup?

Shannon Brooke: A key light, and a good edge light, or a light for separating the subject from the background.  Most of my work is shot with 2-4 lights, indoor or outdoor.

Shannon Brooke: George Petty, Alberto Vargas, Mark Ryden, Richard Fahey.

Sinical Magazine: Do you prefer to shoot inside a studio or on location?

Shannon Brooke: I love both, lighting for me gets a little more complicated while I am inside.  It's cool when I have the power to light my locations like I'm in studio too.  Lots of lights in an outdoor situation is so much fun, I like beating down the background lighting lots for a moody, rich landscape.

Sinical Magazine: What are some of your favorite outdoot locations to shoot at?

Shannon Brooke: I love the desert, dry lake beds, sky with lots of trees.  Anything with a wide open space is my fav.

Sinical Magazine: Who in your opinion, are the top 5. alt models?

Shannon Brooke: Sabina Kelley, Mosh, Masuimi Max, Lourdes Dodds, and Lauren WK (I would love to shoot lauren sometime soon!).

Sinical Magazine: Do you have any pet peeves when it comes to working with models or clients?

Shannon Brooke: I don't like it when clients or models don't credit the photos properly, or crop images for social networks.  There should always be an appreciation for the photographer, makeup, hair, wardrobe styling, set design, etc.

Sinical Magazine: You are the photo editor/cover photographer for Deadbeat Magazine. Can you talk about how this relationship began?

Shannon Brooke: Deadbeat approched Sabina Kelley about a photo I shot of her with her Impala in 2006.  It was a shoot just for fun, and they wanted to use one of the images for the cover of their first issue.  Deadbeat has always been a very consistent company to work for, and they have a good eye for keeping their mag artwork specific to them.  I love working with them, it's truly my favorite gig.

Sinical Magazine: Congratulations on working with Avril Lavigne. What was that experience like?

Shannon Brooke: It was a great experience, I was very nervous... of course. The day went smoothly, and she along with her manager seemed to be impressed with how quickly I worked.  (Thank bejesus, I just didn't want her to get bored so I worked 10x faster than normal).  I hope I get to work with her again in the future.
