Kerosene Deluxe is a Vancover-based pinup model, who is originially from Amsterdam. She has modeling for over a decade and has appeared in Secret Magazine, Bizarre Magazine, among others. This interview was featured in issue #6 of Sinical.

Sinical Magazine: You are from Amsterdam. Can you tell us a little about your background?

Kerosene Deluxe: I was born to a Dutch Father and Thai/Japanese mother in Amsterdam, Holland. It’s a small country very rich in history and charm. A great mix of old world charm and modern madness and a wonderful place to go for a stroll that’s for sure. I moved away when I was 17 to work and live in London, UK where I stayed for almost 4 years before settling in Canada.

Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in modeling?

Kerosene Deluxe: Pure coincidence and it was never something that ever struck my mind growing up. Some 10 years ago I was approached by a photographer who liked my ‘alternative’ look and invited me to his studio for a photo shoot. I had a great time and found it to be an excellent way to express myself and create art.

Sinical Magazine: What drew you to the world of pin up?

Kerosene Deluxe: I had been a fan of artist such as Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren, George Petty and Enoch Bolles for as long as I could remember, as well as the photography of Bernard of Hollywood and Hurrell. What better outlet to celebrate my love for the genre then through photographs?

Sinical Magazine: Do you consider yourself kind of a spokesperson for full figured pin up models?

Kerosene Deluxe: ‘Spokesperson’ is a big title, haha, but I definitely consider myself a size positive activist. Not just for full figured woman perse but for all woman. I think the worst thing that woman do is compare ourselves to others instead of being content with who WE are as beautiful individuals. A big goal with my work has always been for woman, of any shape or size (big or small), to look at my images and think ‘hey she’s not a supermodel or conventionally pretty and she’s okay with that’ and perhaps look at themselves in a different light and realize ‘hey you know what, there’s nothing wrong with the way I look’ and then perhaps someday don’t need a ‘spokesperson’ or ‘role model’ other than themselves….What better suited person then yourself?

Sinical Magazine: Have publishers generally kept an open mind about printing photos of you or has it been difficult to get published?

Kerosene Deluxe: If a magazine won’t publish my images it is not really my concern and not something I fret about or take personal. When one door closes another will open. Has it happened? Sure, but I’m someone who focusses on the positive and am very proud to be a part of and support any publishers open minded enough to promote diversity and my images.

Sinical Magazine: What is the fetish and burlesque scene like in Vancouver?

Kerosene Deluxe: It’s a pretty incredible and close knit community bursting with talented (and sexy!) individuals. Vancouver has some of the best Burlesque performers and troupes out there. It’s something I’m quite proud of! Vancouver scores high on the sass rankings!

Sinical Magazine: Are the models in Vancouver supportive of each other or competitive?

Kerosene Deluxe: A healthy blend of both! Many of the local girls are close friends but some are not. A bit of competitiveness is to be expected anywhere but I prefer to stay as far away from drama as possible.

Sinical Magazine: What is the most important aspect of modeling (for a photo) to you? Is it the make-up, clothing, or pose?

Kerosene Deluxe: The whole package!  From the styling to the lighting, the emotion in the face and eyes, the pose, mood, message. It’s all in the detail.

Sinical Magazine: Who are some photographers you would like to work with someday?

Kerosene Deluxe: Ah too many to name!! My wish list grows each day.

Sinical Magazine: What are some of your favorite pinup and fetish magazines to read?

Kerosene Deluxe: I love vintage girly and fetish magazines. Secret magazine is a fantastic fetish magazine from Europe full of art, photography and interesting articles. Marquis and Skin Two are old favorites. Retro Lovely and Rabid Magazine are always full of beautiful woman.

Sinical Magazine: In this photo series you show both a dominate side and a submissive side. Which side do you lean more towards?

Kerosene Deluxe: I am hands down, 100% a Dominant woman. This shoot was definitely something new for me in terms of posing in a submissive role (in bondage). It was an exciting and fun change but not something I foresee slipping into my personal life and bedroom anytime soon.

Sinical Magazine: What are some of your fetishes?

Kerosene Deluxe: Vintage military uniforms, stiletto heels, fully fashioned seemed stockings and corsets.

Sinical Magazine: You list film noir as one of your inspirations. What is it about the world of film noir that appeals to you?

Kerosene Deluxe: The mystique and allure, the mood and visuals, the styling, the simplicity and charm. Everything..

Sinical Magazine: Is music a source of inspiration to you? If so, what music do you listen to?

Kerosene Deluxe: Music is my biggest inspiration. In fact the majority of shoots I have done came from ideas that popped up while I was listening to music. My taste is quite eclectic. I like anything from Big Band Swing, Doo Wop, Rockabilly and Honkytonk to Punk Rock (Horror punk, Oi, Celtic etc), old school Goth Rock, New Wave, Dark Wave, Industrial, Metal, Surf, Motown, Blues, 1st and 2nd Wave Ska, Roots Reggae, Glam, Surf and underground Hip Hop.
My favorite band of all time is The Cramps. My favorite solo artists are Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Johnny Cash.

Sinical Magazine: What projects are you currently working on?

Kerosene Deluxe: This year I’ll be working throughout the US a lot more as well as new and ongoing collaborations with designers. There are some bigger projects in the works for the near future too but it’s still a little too early to announce anything so keep your eyes and ears open.
